About Us
Welcome to EDLHS Web
Earby and District Local History Society was founded in 1995, at the New Road Community Centre, when six people met to discuss the setting up of a History Society. The membership now stands in excess of 130 persons with a wide variety of interests.
The aims of the Society are to raise awareness of, and foster an interest, in the history of Earby and the Ancient Parish of Thornton in Craven and to facilitate research into the Heritage of Earby and District.
Geographically the Society's main area of interest is the Ancient Parish of Thornton-in-Craven which includes the hamlets of Thornton-in-Craven, Earby, Kelbrook, Sough, Hague, Harden and Salterforth.
The Society meets on the third Tuesday of the month at New Road Community Centre, New Road, Earby (unless otherwise announced). Meetings begin at 7-30 pm. and usually include a talk on a historical subject with local interest. Admission is £1 for members and £1-50 for non members including tea and biscuits .
Our quarterly news letter the Earby Chronicles is free to members and £2.00 to non-members.
The Society is building an archive of local material including books, documents and photographs which are available for research purposes by arrangement. We are also active in local projects including the transcription of Parish Registers, recording historic buildings and heritage preservation.
Our Archive is being progressively digitized and is available on-line to members of the Society by following the link to Members Log In.
